BYC 2014 One Design Series Day #12 at BeniciaJune 20
Story
From Gail:
Pump up those psoas! Your digits will cry. / We gotta make the mark, It is do it or die.
We won't need to worry, Not with that boat. It's big and it's red, They will keep us afloat.
Wind's a whippin' tides a pushin', I gotta hair in my eye. Hold on now, we're late? We should kiss 'em goodbye.
Down wind we'll catch 'em (we won't hafta tack). Hold the line! Pull it in!Dang, we've only gone back!
With the wind behind us, up the channel we'll go. If we dump it, we'll jump it and no one will know.
Hold the line! Pull it in! Keep shallow, keep flat. We can pass those buoys!Shoot! I just lost my hat!
It's still fun! (I laugh through the din of the sail). Y're the best in the west! Or my name isn't Gail!

From Marcel:
Thanks for all the extra effort in organizing the long race on Friday night. Also, hats off to all the guys in the multiple crash boats that kept a close eye on us. Your time and effort is very much appreciated.
As usual, sailboat racing offers up humble pie on a regular basis. Poor judgement on my part ended my evening prematurely. Vanguards and submerged rocks don't mix.
Hope to have the boat repaired for Friday night.

From Scott O.:
Dana-We’re not over early
Scott-Please hike, no talking, we’re going over
Dana-So, I think it’s blowing harder
Scott- Good, we’ll go faster, I think
Dana- There goes Dean and Andrew
Scott- Sucks to be skinny tonight
Dana- How much longer ’til we get there?
Scott-Well, it’s been 6 minutes, so another 7 to the corner, 3 to the buoy, the we hike like hell for another, say 20, round the marker, and pray we don’t have to jibe, we should be back in under an hour, Why?
Dana- There’s tacos at the house
Scott- I’m kinda hungry, Tacos sound good

From Klein:
1. Wow! Josh did a pretty good job holding the starting line while underway. All things considered, the line was pretty square…..
2. Whaz’up with this restricted area at the channel entrance? That’s new…. Good thing the inflatable is there to warn boats coming out the channel that we’re racing.
3. Beat up the Benicia shoreline: Wow, it’s blowing up here!!!! Where’s the flood???? The guys outside are just as fast.
4. Beat out to the islands: Look at all the back-eddies and swirling water. It’s like sailing in a washing machine….with puffs! Glad there are 3 crashboats tonight…..
5. Washing machine turns into whitewater rafting trip at the point. Here’s the flood! Did I say “Sure glad there are 3 crashboats tonight”?
6. Very tight 2-sail reach across to Semple Crossing buoy: I’ve never been so fast in a V15 in my life. ScottR keeps coming up for air. All I see is bow spray and big waves….
7. Nearing 9th street: Ouch these long beats hurt. How soon before the weather mark? This hurts….
8. Rounding the weather mark: Look how fast the current is going by the green buoy....
9. The downwind leg: wind and water going in same direction. Thank God we’re done hiking out….

From Nick:
Nick: Holy S***!!!
Phil: Focus!
Nick: Joel is never going to clear those rocks.
Phil: Focus! WATCH OUT FOR MARCEL!!!
Nick: Joel messed up and is out in the current hating life. Two more quick tacks here and we’ll blow past him.
Phil: NO! This is nuts. Don’t tack in these rapids. Focus!
Nick: I can’t see! *coughing up water*
Phil: Focus! *also coughing up water*
Nick: Why is our main so twisted off?
Phil: Focus!
Nick: Chris WAY over stood. Joel too.
Phil: Yup. Tack now.
Nick: Weeeeee!!!!
Phil: Focus!
Nick: Hope we make this (around 21A), that would be like getting hit by a barge doing 4 kts.
Phil: No sweat.
Nick: HOLY S***!!!!!!!
Phil: FOCUS!!! HOLY S***!!!! (Okay, Phil didn’t actually say that last part, but his tone-of-voice did.)
Nick: We just hit 15 kts over ground.
Phil: Fooooooocccccccuuuuuuusssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From Josh:
Thanks all for sharing your experiences out on the course. I was a bit torn seeing so many boats retiring and second guessing myself for not just switching to the short course. In hindsight though, considering it was 25-30+ everywhere, there'd a likely been similar fall out.
I didn't get up to the top part of the course but stayed out in the middle kind of coordinating things on the radio and providing assistance as needed. I'd like to thank the teams on the safety boats, many of which also got soaked:
Carp Diem: set the Semple Crossing Mark and stayed with the race leaders - Read Hayward and Jeff Cody
Big Red: Set the line and the lower course as well as protected the marina entrance and performed the capsize assist - Chris Sutterley. and Steve Rivers
Ranger: Monitored the boats below the leaders and stood by to ward off any overzealous power boaters - Curt and Jack Sutter
Swee'Pea: RC - Sean Butler, Patricia and Abigail Mrotz, and myself.
Looks like I'm potentially on the calendar again in September so perhaps we'll give it another go.
