The scene: May 5/9 unpredictable currents through extreme gradient topography
White caps adorned the water when we got to the ramp Friday evening. Air kept pushing hard through the hills for the first two races. By race #3, windward mark, we were wondering if the fourth race would happen. The direction of the wind was unpredictable throughout the four races shifting back and forth by 90+ degrees. Marcel, Sophia and I were race committee.

Marcel presented a dandy tool when he let me hold a little black flag to align the start line 90 degrees to the wind. I liked that flag. It is not a necessary tool but it takes the guess work out of ....We set the course as quickly as possible, Sophia is strong, we were late.

Marcel was patient with my queries into rules. He had given me a black and white larger flag and instructed me to hold it in hand just in case... It's purpose? to let an individual sailboat know it has gone over the line early when starting. Marcel continued... sailors though, are responsible for knowing if they go over the line early.

Marcel....? Then why the flag? Last week I....We had time to play with words while the sailors battled. So I not only went over the line early...I understand barging a little better. It can be done all the way along the start line not just at the committee boat! watch out for those starboard, leeward, overlapped sailboats they come up... and don't forget you can run out of line or be pushed over by current.

Our boat was dragging anchor...."move the other end" Marcel hailed the sailing support crew. (gotta keep that line 90 to the wind) The whistle blew to start another race. The action was at the other end:
Maybe it was a wind shift..... when Joel and Gus got fouled up!
Maybe....Gus had a great start and Joel was crazy jealous...so he did something about it!

Maybe Gus was experiencing karma!.... I will get mine too.
Sophia held another super dandy tool, the sports cam, used to decipher just who got what points for the night....
The third race slowed during the plow to windward mark which sent us wondering if a fourth race would happen. By the downwind leg I was wanting tea and crumpets. A short run up to windward and return to finish downwind comprised the fourth race.

Later, up at the club, Joel taught me about center lining into the wind to determine favored end. (If u r pointing to the right, go right.) I DID NOT KNOW THAT!

Looking forward to seeing what this race looked like on the latest tool, a pod cast.
